Basically, there are three steps you need to do to be able to log into a remote PC.
0. It will be necessary to set up the router to which your remote PC is connected to enable the request that comes in for connection to the remote PC can be properly directed. This is known as "port forwarding." Every router may have a somewhat different procedure for doing this, but if you log into the router as ADMIN, it should not be that difficult to turn on port forwarding (port number 3389 by default) to direct the requests for remote connection over to the required PC.
1. Enable remote access to you PC. This can be done by right clicking on "Computer" (accessible from the Start button in Windows 7, or from the Main folder on the Task Bar), selecting "Properties", and then selecting "Advanced system settings". Click on the "Remote" tab, and then select the item "Allow connections from computers to running any version of Remote Desktop." Click on "Apply", then on "OK". You have now set up the Remote PC to be logged onto from another location. You do not have to perform this setup again.
2. When you want to log on to the remote PC, run Remote Desktop Connection on the local PC. You can find the Remote Desktop Connection program by searching programs for "Remote Desktop Connection". When you run the program, you will need to enter the IP address (of the Remote PC that you are updated by the emailMyIP service) in the "Computer" field and the user name you want to log into on the Remote PC into the "User name" field. You will be promted for the Password that is on the user name account. Once you have logged in, you will see the desktop of the remote PC on your local PC, and it will be as if you are sitting in front of your remote PC, although you may be anywhere else in the world with an Internet connection.
Two additional things to note:
a. You can even run a program on the remote PC to use a videocam connected to the remote PC. Therefore, you can see what is happening at the remote location, and do not have to have your video uploaded to a 3rd-party website. You and you alone will be the only one having access to the live videostream.
b. There is now an Android version of Remote Desktop Connection. That means you can use your Android smartphone or tablet to log onto your remote PC. |
